Taking rings by bayonet
sport

Bild von National Library of Scotland
Members of the Black Watch at a sports day, during World War I. This image shows an event taking place at a sports day organised for the Black Watch. This particular event involves the competitors collecting small rings using their bayonet, whilst running down a field. The four men taking part are level with the rings. A judge stands off to the side and a crowd of spectators and other competitors watch from the perimeter.

Games such as this would have been enjoyable for the men, providing them with good physical exercise and the opportunity to relax. It also allowed them to practise their skills at handling weapons and equipment.

[Original reads: 'BRITISH OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT. Black Watch hold sports whilst resting. Taking rings by bayonet.']

Arlington Club, 1918
golf

Bild von UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
This photo of the Arlington Club accompanied an article on camping. The Arlington Club consisted of one hundred and fifty acres of wooded rolling ground which was bounded on the north by homes, on the east by Cambridge Boulevard and on the west by the Scioto River. It was purchased by the Shriners of the Aladdin Temple in March of 1919 to be their place for pleasure, entertainment and exercise. The spacious grounds included tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, a club house, and a dance hall. The tower to the left of the buildings is probably a water tower which was commonly found on Grandview properties at that time.
